Ask Internal Q&A in a Slack DM
Updated October 6, 2026 · 2 min read
Ask Internal Q&A in a Slack DM when you want an answer from your knowledge base without posting in a shared channel. You turn it on once per Internal Q&A worker with a Direct messages trigger.
Before you start
- Slack is connected under Integrations and the Internal Q&A worker is enabled with at least one active skill.
- If you connected Slack before direct messages were available, reconnect Slack so Zentesimal gets the extra permissions it needs to read and answer DMs.
Turn on Direct messages for Internal Q&A
- Open Workers → Internal Q&A and go to Settings → Triggers.

- Click Add trigger, choose Always-on, and pick the Slack message event.
- Open the event Settings and set Listen in to Direct messages.

- Save the trigger. Optionally add Customer segments to it, the same way as any other trigger.
Ask a question in Slack
- In Slack, open the Zentesimal app and use its Messages tab, or open it from Slack's Agents & AI Apps view.
- Type your question in plain language. No @mention is needed in a DM.
- The bot answers in a thread under your message, with its sources. Reply in that thread to ask a follow-up.
How follow-ups keep context
Internal Q&A reads the whole thread, including its own earlier answers, before it replies. If you ask a new top-level message right after an answer instead of replying in the thread, it also reads your recent DM history, so "and what about the annual plan?" still makes sense.
Where DM answers show up in Zentesimal
Every DM question creates a row on the Internal Q&A worker's Results tab with the channel Slack DM. Company admins can read these rows like any other Result, so tell your team that DMs are private in Slack but not hidden from admins.
FAQ
Why doesn't the bot answer my DM?
Check that the Internal Q&A worker is enabled, has an active skill, and has a Slack message trigger with Listen in set to Direct messages. If you connected Slack before DMs were available, reconnect Slack to grant the new permissions.
Do I need to @mention the bot in a DM?
No. In a direct message or the Slack agent view, every message goes to Internal Q&A, including replies inside the thread.
Can other people see my DM questions?
Not in Slack. In Zentesimal, each question is saved as a Result with the channel Slack DM, which company admins can read.
Will my DM conversations be added to the knowledge base?
No. Slack knowledge sync only reads the saved Internal Q&A channel, never direct messages.
