Quick summary
Freshdesk and Zoho Desk start at $19 and $7 per agent a month. Zoho Desk, Help Scout, HubSpot Service Hub and Jira Service Management also have free plans (vendor pricing pages, October 2026).
Zendesk includes 5 automated AI resolutions per agent a month on Team plans and 10 on Professional, then charges $1.50 to $2.00 for each extra one (Zendesk pricing page, October 2026).
At 2,000 AI resolutions a month, a 10-agent Suite Team account pays $2,925 to $3,900 for resolutions beyond its allowance (Zendesk list prices, October 2026).
Zendesk's AI agent dashboards come with every plan. Automatic quality reviews of AI conversations and intent detection need paid add-ons (Zendesk help center, October 2026).
One Zendesk team went from 35% to 75% resolution in three and a half months after adding automated analysis of its AI conversations and VoC (Zentesimal client data, 2026).
The best Zendesk alternatives are Freshdesk and Zoho Desk for price, Help Scout for simplicity and Intercom for chat-led AI. HubSpot Service Hub suits teams built on a CRM (customer relationship management), and Salesforce Service Cloud suits enterprise. Most teams start looking because of cost. When the real problem is an AI that stops improving, a new help desk won't fix it.
This guide compares 10 Zendesk competitors on price, free plans, AI pricing and G2 rating. It ends with a decision matrix for the question behind most searches: switch, or keep Zendesk and fix the AI.
Disclosure: Zentesimal makes AI agents that run on top of help desks, including Zendesk. It is not on the list below, and it appears only in its own section near the end.
How do the best Zendesk alternatives compare?
Zoho Desk and Help Scout are the cheapest way in, Salesforce Service Cloud and Kustomer the deepest, and Intercom the most AI-led. The table puts Zendesk first as the baseline.

How much does Zendesk cost?
Zendesk charges per agent on four plans. AI, quality review and workforce tools are billed on top.

What does Zendesk AI cost?
Zendesk bills its AI agent per automated resolution: a request "successfully resolved by the AI agent, without any escalation to a human agent". Each plan includes an allowance per agent. Above it, each resolution costs $1.50 on a committed volume or $2.00 pay as you go.
A 10-agent Suite Team account includes 50 automated resolutions a month. If its AI resolves 2,000, the other 1,950 cost $2,925 committed or $3,900 pay as you go.
Above the allowance, every resolution the AI closes is a separate charge.
Why do reviewers call Zendesk expensive?
Reviewers point to features they expected in their plan that sit in a higher tier or an add-on. A support operations lead on G2 calls the "paywalling of critical features" their least favorite practice (October 2025).
Why is Zendesk AI hard to improve?
The AI agent reports what happened, but the analysis of why it failed is spread across add-ons. Without it, teams can't tell what to train next.
What do Zendesk's AI analytics include?
Zendesk includes AI agent dashboards on every plan. The deeper analysis sits in paid add-ons, according to Zendesk's own help center.
Zendesk AI analysis features, October 2026
Feature | What it shows | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
Volume, automated resolutions, contact reasons, conversation paths | Included in every plan | |
Intent and sentiment of each ticket, and why customers reach out | Copilot add-on | |
Automatic review of AI conversations and how often they escalate | QA or Workforce Engagement add-on | |
Help center coverage compared with recent tickets | Professional and above, early access |
"It gives us numbers and data to use (even if the more nuanced data points are paywalled...)"
What should an AI support analysis show?
Five questions tell a team what to train next.
What an AI support analysis should show
- Real resolution versus handled. Which conversations ended solved, and which only ended without a human.
- Answers the AI has but misses. Questions the help center covers that the AI still escalates.
- Topics that point to a product or documentation gap. Repeated questions no article answers.
- Whether a training change helped. Resolution on the same topic before and after the change.
- What humans do after an escalation. The reply the agent wrote, so the AI can learn it.
Point 3 is where VoC (voice of the customer) comes in. Voice of the customer is the method of summarizing customers' expectations, preferences and dislikes in their own words. Grouped by topic, it shows which missing answers matter most.

The full method, with examples, is in how to analyze your AI support agent.
Are there free Zendesk alternatives?
Yes. Zoho Desk, Help Scout, HubSpot Service Hub and Jira Service Management have free plans, each with limits that matter once a team grows.
- Zoho Desk calls its free edition Free Forever, with no time limit.
- Help Scout caps its free plan at 100 contacts a month, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site.
- HubSpot Service Hub shows HubSpot branding on the free live chat, with 3 snippets and 3 templates.
- Jira Service Management includes 2 GB of storage and 1,250 automation steps a month on its free plan.
- Freshdesk no longer lists a free plan. Its Free Program covers up to 2 agents for 6 months.
Zendesk itself has no free plan. Its 14-day trial gives access to Suite Professional features.
How did we pick and compare these tools?
We picked help desks that a Zendesk team of 5 to 200 agents could realistically move to, and compared them on public data only.
- Same job as Zendesk. Each tool runs shared ticketing for customer or internal support. A help desk, in the plain sense, is the team or tool that answers customer problems.
- Sold today, with public pricing for the plans or for the AI. Kustomer is the exception: its plans are sales-led, but its AI prices are public.
- At least 400 reviews on G2.
- Prices read on each vendor's pricing page on 22 and 23 October 2026, in US dollars. Zendesk and Jira Service Management served regional prices to our location, so we used archived copies of their US pages from October 2026. Zoho Desk's USD price comes from 2026 pricing guides that agree on it. The Jira Service Management price is the default of its pricing calculator.
- Ratings from G2, with the month each was read. Zendesk, Intercom, HubSpot Service Hub, Salesforce Service Cloud and Jira Service Management were read on G2 in October 2026. For the rest, G2 blocks automated reading, so we used the most recent archived copy of each page.
- Quotes are verbatim from G2 reviews, with role, segment and date.
We did not run hands-on trials of each tool, and we did not benchmark AI resolution across vendors.
Which Zendesk competitors are worth shortlisting?
Ten help desks cover almost every reason to leave Zendesk. Each entry says what it fixes and what it doesn't.
1. Freshdesk: the closest like-for-like switch
Freshdesk matches most of Zendesk's ticketing at a similar entry price, and its top plan stops at $89 per agent. Its AI agent, Freddy, is billed per session, resolved or not. Our guide to Freshdesk alternatives covers its pricing in detail.
Is Freshdesk better than Zendesk? It is cheaper at the top end and quicker to set up. Zendesk has the larger app marketplace and deeper routing.
"Some of its advanced features require a subscription, which can make it difficult to use for small and medium-sized organisations."
2. Zoho Desk: the budget pick
Zoho Desk fits teams already on Zoho CRM. Zia, its AI, comes inside the Professional plan rather than as an add-on. Its reports are the common limit in reviews.
"the reporting module doesn't offer the level of customization I'd want for more advanced analytics unless you rely on additional tools."
3. Help Scout: the simpler shared inbox
Help Scout feels like email, which keeps training short. Paid plans top out at $75 per user per month. Its limit is channels: a customer care lead on G2 points to "limited capability... for calls and chat" (May 2026).
4. Intercom: the AI-first, chat-led platform
Intercom suits SaaS companies that support customers inside the product, by chat. Seats go up to $132 per month on the top plan, and Fin, its AI agent, is billed on top.
"...it can scale up quickly as your user base or contact volume grows."
5. HubSpot Service Hub: the CRM-unified choice
Service Hub puts tickets and the CRM record in one place, which helps when sales and support share customers. Professional and Enterprise carry onboarding fees of $1,500 and $3,500.
"some advanced features are limited to higher-tier plans, which can increase costs for growing teams."
6. Salesforce Service Cloud: the enterprise upgrade
Service Cloud suits companies whose sales team already runs on Salesforce. Editions go up to $550 per user per month, where Agentforce for Service, its AI agent, is included.
"Some features have a steep learning curve, especially for new users... The licensing cost is also on the higher side compared to other tools."
7. Front: the collaborative shared inbox
Front turns email into a shared workspace across support, sales and operations. Plans go up to $105 per seat per month on annual billing. Reviewers rate it highest among the tools here, though some automation sits in higher plans.
8. Gorgias: the ecommerce specialist
Gorgias connects deeply to Shopify, so agents can edit orders from the ticket. It bills by ticket volume rather than seats. For a B2B (business-to-business) SaaS team, the ecommerce focus is a poor fit.
"My biggest frustration with Gorgias is that the live chat interface cannot be fully customized."
9. Kustomer: the CRM-style timeline for large teams
Kustomer organizes support around the customer rather than the ticket, with one timeline per person across channels. Plan prices are sales-led. Envoy, its assistant for human agents, costs $50 per user per month.
10. Jira Service Management: the IT service desk
Jira Service Management fits IT and internal support teams already on Atlassian. Its virtual service agent, on Premium and above, includes 1,000 assisted conversations a month, then $0.30 each.
"The reporting and dashboard options could be more flexible. Some advanced features also take time to understand and configure."
Should you switch help desk or add AI to Zendesk?
It depends on why you want to leave. A new help desk fixes price, channel and workflow problems. It doesn't tell the team why the AI fails.
A help desk migration changes the ticketing tool. The AI's training gaps move with it.

Decision matrix: switch, add AI or stay
Main reason to leave | What fixes it | Recommended move |
|---|---|---|
Seat costs grow faster than the team | Lower seat prices (Freshdesk, Zoho Desk) or free tiers | Switch |
Core features sit in add-ons | A tool that includes them in the plan | Compare plan matrices, then switch |
Support runs mostly in chat inside the product | Intercom | Switch |
Sales and support need one customer record | HubSpot Service Hub or Salesforce Service Cloud | Switch |
The team handles IT or internal requests | Jira Service Management | Switch |
AI resolution stopped improving and nobody knows why | Automated analysis of AI conversations and VoC | Keep Zendesk, add analysis and an AI agent on top |
AI bill grows past the resolution allowance | AI billed per resolution at a lower rate | Keep Zendesk, change the AI agent |
Ticketing works and the team is trained | Nothing | Stay |
A migration has its own cost: data export, rebuilt automations, and a team relearning its daily tool. Economists call these switching barriers, and they are procedural and relational as well as financial. Our post on adding AI without paying the tool switching cost prices them in detail.

Adding AI to Zendesk instead of replacing it
Disclosure: this is the option Zentesimal makes. Zentesimal builds AI agents for support that run on top of the help desk a team already has, including Zendesk. Nothing gets migrated.
The agent answers with each customer's context: plan, usage, billing and past conversations. Around it, Zentesimal analyzes every AI conversation automatically and groups what customers ask into VoC topics. The team sees what failed, which answer was missing and what to train next.
Some Zendesk teams came to Zentesimal for that analysis. One went from 35% to 75% resolution in three and a half months, using the analysis to retrain its AI (Zentesimal client data, 2026).
At Metricool, Bruno, the support agent in the chat, keeps 86% of about 30,000 conversations a month from reaching a human, and 72% end resolved with confidence, in production since March 2026 (Metricool success story). A conversation counts as resolved when the outcome is inferred from the conversation or confirmed by the customer.
Zentesimal works on top of any helpdesk: Zendesk, Freshdesk, Intercom, Crisp and others.
